AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE - San Joaquin Valley / Hanford, CA
Issued: Thursday, September 2 2010 - 9:45 AM PDT
Synopsis... High pressure aloft will continue to build over Central California. Strong warming will send temperatures some 10 to 15 degrees above average through at least Saturday. An upper-level trough will bring cooler temperatures for Labor Day and the first part of next week.
Update... Another clear day in-store today with temperatures warming toward triple digits. Current 24 hour temperature trend shows valley locations running about 3-5 deg-f warmer this morning. Based on the fact that Wednesday/s max values were in the lower to mid 90s...a few locations reaching the 100 deg-f mark is not out of the question. Short range model solutions show the high pressure ridge axis over the West Coast today...and shifting east over the Great Basin by Friday morning. Therefore...will see the warming trend continue through Friday as 500mb heights rise by an additional 20 to 30 meters. Current forecast shows this trend so no updates needed. Models then show heights falling on Saturday as a upper trof moves through the Pacific Northwest. This will introduce a slight cooling trend through the weekend. Yet...the forecast calls for dry conditions through the period. With no significant changes expected...will make no updates.
Prev discussion... /issued 214 AM PDT Thu Sep 2 2010/ large ridge of high pressure dominates the region this morning and this will continue for the next few days. Warming will continue Today through Saturday and highs will easily exceed the century mark in the deserts, SJV and Sierra foothills. At this time Friday looks to be the warmest day. By late Saturday forecast models are in good agreement in the approach of a trough of low pressure from the Pacific Northwest and then driving the trough south across Central California on Sunday. Once again a big cool down will occur and highs will drop by around 20 degrees or so by Monday. Models then keep a lingering "baggy" trough over the area on Tuesday before a secondary and potentially deeper system moves into California by Wednesday. Some disagreement between the GFS and ECMWF models as to whether this system comes through as a deep closed low or a weaker trough. Still lots of time for the models to come to a consensus however.
Aviation... Vfr conditions will prevail across the Central California interior through 18z Friday.
Air quality issues... Please see sfoaqahnx
HNX watches/warnings/advisories... None.
